2007 Advanced Practice Symposium at Penn State University (PSU)

HFM Penn State

Dear HFM members:

The inaugural Advanced Practice Symposium at Penn State University (PSU) was a huge success!

Over 40 HFM members went back to school to attend the 2007 HFM and PSU Learning Symposium for Advance Level Practice: Leadership, Labor and Quantitative Decision Making.

The cutting-edge, educational sessions took place May 7-9 and were taught by faculty from PSU's Hospitality Leadership Institute (HLI) at the Penn Stater Conference Center in State College, PA.

The symposium was designed to enhance the decision-making ability of senior foodservice administrators in healthcare. The curriculum included topics on quantitative analysis of foodservice operations, application of labor productivity metrics, systems approach to customer satisfaction, employee retention and leadership, as well as best practices from all segments of the hospitality industry.

This year's class praised the faculty and the two-day workshop's curriculum. Attendees had this to say about the symposium in a recent survey:

"It is, by far, the best educational program I've attended in a long time. It was a real pleasure to attend a well-prepared meeting that was heavy in content and expertise, and light in social activities. I shall take pleasure in reporting to my administrator that the time and money was well spent."

"Penn State did a great job in supporting our learning needs. Mr. Dominic Boffa's program (Meeting Customer Demands with Cutting-Edge Technology) provided valuable information- I'm using some of that information today in my capital presentation. (Boffa is the chief information officer and vice president, technology solutions for Aramark) The take home messages session was innovative, effective and of great value; Penn Staff faculty was wonderful."

Overall, survey respondents gave the symposium a rating of 4.5 from a scale of one to five, with four being very good and five being excellent.

HFM would like to thank Georgia Pacific/Dixie Foodservice and Sysco for sponsoring the symposium.

We hope you will join us at future educational networking events as we take HFM to the next level!

Thank you.
