Urban Passport 8th Grade Road Trip

Last week our 8th Grade scholars returned from their Urban Passport to Learning Road Trip, an immersive three-day class trip making stops in Springfield and St. Louis.

The class boarded the Holy Family bus early Monday morning and headed to their first destination; Harris-Stowe University a Historically Black University located in St. Louis. Scholars toured the campus with university students, seeing all the campus had to offer and a glimpse into several academic journeys. The campus visit was followed by an afternoon exploring the City Museum, a museum that blends art and play, filled with installations our scholars enjoyed walking through, climbing over, and crawling under.

Day two began with a tour of the beautiful St. Louis University campus, where scholars learned the ins and outs of what it takes to apply and be admitted to the university. St. Louis sightseeing followed, with a trip to the top of The Gateway Arch and a river cruise on the Mississippi. The Griot Museum of Black History was the final stop of the day, the city's oldest Black history museum, with exhibits expounding on the legacies of leaders like Josephine Baker and Martin Luther King Jr.

On day three, scholars began their journey back to Chicago with a final stop in Springfield. There, they toured the Illinois State Capitol and Lincoln's Home National Historic Site, taking an in depth look at Illinois state government and history.

From college campuses to cultural landmarks, this trip brought learning to life. Our scholars spend three days expanding their perspectives and envisioning the paths ahead as their time at Holy Family comes to a close.
